The one about modern fatherhood

What does it mean to be a modern father?

I’ve been reflecting on this question as I embark on this next chapter of life.

Instead of diving into the usual prenatal classes, I’ve been talking to my friends who are dads and taking them for a drive in my car while peppering them with questions that I want to know.

What are the unspoken truths of fatherhood? How do you maintain your own sense of identity and agency over your time? How do you continue to have a thriving relationship with your partner?

Since starting 2 Dads 1 Car, my mindset has shifted in these past two weeks about parenting. Many of the stories shared are not covered in the typical parenting books, which is unfortunate. But these are important questions because they relate to what it is like to be a father in these modern times.

It seems like suffering during parenthood is something that is encouraged and even expected when you speak with parents. Yet there must be something more to parenting than sleep deprivation or waiting until your children turn 18 to have freedom.

Otherwise, why bother?

What if parenting was fun? What if parenting was joyful? What if parenting was full of bliss and personal growth? What would that look like?

Let’s find out.

Join me on 2 Dads 1 Car where I discuss these ideas with new dads and help shape the conversation on what modern fatherhood looks like.
